USPI Safari: Use and benefits of 3D models in commissioning | 13 Feb 2025

USPI Safari: Use and Benefits of 3D Models in Commissioning

USPI held a Safari session focused on the critical build-up of 3D/2D data and equipment information to facilitate successful commissioning.
The Safari was held online on Thursday, February 13, 2025, from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM (UTC+01:00) Amsterdam.

During this session, participants explored key questions, including:

  • What were the requirements from a commissioning perspective?

  • What was the current state of data readiness?

  • What improvements were necessary, recommended, or optional in areas such as data management, processes, skills, timing, and capabilities?

  • What were the potential impacts on cost, scheduling, and other project outcomes?

This 90-minute online Safari provided a deep dive into the use and benefits of 3D models in commissioning, with at least half of the time dedicated to Q&A and discussion.

Featured Presenter

Paul Turner, Founder of The Industrial Commissioning Association (ICxA), led the session.

Paul’s career began in the aerospace industry, where he built satellites and rockets for the Canadian Space Agency. He later transitioned to the power sector, applying the rigorous quality standards of aerospace engineering to commissioning hydroelectric generating stations, HVDC transmission systems, and wastewater treatment facilities. Recognizing the gap in quality emphasis between aerospace and ground-based projects, he founded ICxA to promote advanced commissioning practices and help professionals achieve better schedule and budget outcomes for capital mega-projects.

ICxA’s Core Principles

  • Access to Industry Best Practices – Making industry-leading commissioning practices accessible to everyone working on large-scale projects.

  • Commissioning Competency – Setting global standards for industrial plant and energy system commissioning.

  • Commissioning Advocacy – Building bridges between stakeholders to highlight the value of effective commissioning.
