Your 3D Model Could Be Costing You Millions Without You Realizing It

Introduction

In today’s digital era, where data analytics, machine learning, and AI applications are revolutionizing our lives and work practices, large projects and facilities nevertheless struggle to managing their data in 3D models.

The creation of a 3D model is a prerequisite for development of a Bill of Materials and a construction plan.  It is very expensive to create the model, yet most organizations do not realize their full potential.

A 2024 survey conducted by USPI revealed that only 20% of owner-operators maintain their 3D models. This allows them to implement multiple use cases, including brownfield engineering, operator training, maintenance planning, and integrity management. In contrast, 80% of organizations did not maintain their models, leading to a lack of trust and limited usage of the models and associated digital twins .

Summary of FL3DMS FTF Meeting 2025

Summary of FL3DMS FTF Meeting 2025

Last week, industry leaders gathered in-person for the FL3DMS Face-to-Face (FTF) meeting, hosted by USPI. Members from across the energy, engineering, and digital solutions sectors came together to refine and advance the FL3DMS standard – shaping the standard for the way 3D data is structured, shared, and handed over across the asset lifecycle.

With representatives from TotalEnergies, Shell, McDermott, Aker Solutions, Fluor, Wood PLC, TechnipEnergies, Gizil, Hexagon, Aveva, ReVision, Mitosis Digital Technologies, xclerate and USPI’s standardization partners IOGP, Standards Norway and DEXPI,  the working group made significant progress on Release 1.3, which is scheduled for Q4 2025.
