USPI has published the first report from the Information Management in Large Capital Facilities project, or IM-LCF.
The report, IM-LCF Project Report on Series 1, presents the findings and lessons learned from the first IM-LCF workshop series. This series examined how organisations can use ISO 15926-11 and a Common Data Environment to improve the integration and management of information throughout the lifecycle of a large capital facility.
Addressing fragmentation in large capital projects
Large capital projects involve many organisations, disciplines, systems and lifecycle stages. Project information is therefore often fragmented across separate tools, data structures and organisational boundaries.
The report explains how this fragmentation affects the consistency, traceability and reuse of information. It considers both organisational fragmentation between project partners and fragmentation over time between requirements, design, construction, operations and maintenance.
Workshop Series 1 focused on the role of a data-centric Common Data Environment in addressing these challenges.

- the practical role of a Common Data Environment;
- the use of ISO 15926-11 for structured and connected lifecycle information;
- information architectures, project ontologies and reference data;
- integration of documents, engineering data and graphical models;
- information maturity and organisational readiness;

- limitations in existing software tools; and
- lessons learned from participating organisations.
The report does not prescribe a single implementation method. Instead, it provides practical guidance, recommendations, templates and considerations that organisations can adapt to their own project context.

The publication is intended for owner operators, EPC contractors, engineering companies, suppliers, software providers, consultants and information-management professionals involved in large capital facility projects.
It can help organisations:
- define realistic information-management ambitions;
- identify organisational and technical barriers;
- improve data quality and integration;
- strengthen collaboration between engineering, information-management and IT functions;
- evaluate the use of international standards; and
- make better-informed decisions about Common Data Environment implementation.
The report was prepared by the USPI IM-LCF project team with contributions from specialists representing several organisations in the process and energy industries.
Part of the wider IM-LCF programme
Workshop Series 1 is the first part of a four-series programme.
Workshop Series 2 addressed the cleansing and integration of engineering and supplier data. Workshop Series 3, on Information Maturity Assessment, is currently in progress. Workshop Series 4 will focus on defining the capabilities that software tools should provide to support standards-based information management in integrated project environments.
USPI will publish separate reports on the findings from the other workshop series.
